What is a High-Risk Pregnancy?
A high-risk pregnancy means there's a greater chance of health issues for the mother or baby. It doesn’t always lead to complications—but it does require close monitoring and expert care to ensure a safe pregnancy and delivery.
Who is at Risk?
Several factors can contribute to a high-risk pregnancy:
- High blood pressure or diabetes
- PCOS or thyroid conditions
- Obesity or being underweight
- Age below 18 or above 35
- Multiple pregnancies
- History of miscarriage or complications
- Infections like HIV or Hepatitis
- Lifestyle risks (smoking, alcohol, or drug use)
Age and Pregnancy Risks
Teens may face a higher chance of anaemia or premature labour, while women over 35 may experience gestational diabetes, genetic risks, or longer labours. With timely care, most complications can be managed.
When to Call Your Doctor
Seek medical help if you notice:
- Severe or persistent headaches
- Blurred vision or dizziness
- Fever over 100.4°F (38°C)
- Shortness of breath or chest pain
- Swollen hands, feet, or face
- Abdominal pain or lack of fetal movement
- These signs may need urgent attention.
Diagnosis & Tests
If your doctor suspects a high-risk pregnancy, you may need:
- Blood tests and urine analysis
- Diabetes and blood pressure screening
- Ultrasound & fetal monitoring
- Infection and genetic screening
